LIVE ZOOM PERFORMANCE/ CONVERSATION EVENT

Sunday Nov 21st, 2021, 1pm

Please join us Sunday November 21st, 1pm on Zoom for a gathering of sharing the live videos, a conversation amongst the artists and elder guests and to answer questions from the audience and hopefully a surprise offering of collaborative improvised musical sharing.

Nutsa’maat Sqwalawun - One Heart One Mind, weaves our voices in the true spirit of reconcili-Action through musical improvisation. The project was initiated after counsel with respected Indigenous Cowichan elders from the traditional territories of the Coast Salish, Quw'utsun lands. Blessings for combining traditional music with settler musicians and Indigenous musicians was supported by the Elders. This musical collaboration between settlers musicians and Indigenous musicians is not taken for granted, nor has it been easy or clear to find the best ways forward in creating and exploring this new improvisatory landscape.

The artistic Director, Cari Burdett, is honoured and grateful for the offerings of the artists and recognizes the profound trust upon which these Indigenous artists shared their stories, voices and songs together with the settler musicians in new unchartered expressive ways.

The goal was to create a safe place where the artists could weave their voices in an exploratory musical landscape and begin to meet each other through their musical gifts and languages. This offering was created to hold the possibility that through these actions we can begin to build trust with each other and move towards reconciliation, bringing a deepened sense of connection, listening and relationship

With highest respect for all those that supported this initiative.

This project combines the works of NATE HARRIS, DAN LAPP, ANNE SCHAEFER, CARI BURDETT, QWALSIMIYU (CATHERINE SAMPSON), GLENN PATTERSON and HWIEMTUN (FRED ROLAND).

This project was recorded live at Duncan Showroom, on the 30th of September, 2021 in honour of the 1st National Truth & Reconciliation Day.

We are hoping that this is just the beginning of further music cross cultural explorations that Lila Music/Cari Burdett and friends will be creating.  Thank you for your financial support of any size to continue this important work of decolonizing and Reconcili-Action through music, community building and trust.  It’s with your support that we set new important pathways of healing and we are so grateful for your trust that this is work is not only possible, but important.

Request for Support and Contribution from Community:
Suggested donation of $20 - $40 if you can offer more, that would be supportive and appreciated by all involved.

In full transparency, Lila Music received funding from SoundOn, however after listening deeply to the needs of the Indigenous elders, it became clear that the scope of the project needed to change to honour the contribution of these elders.  As such, the expenses of this project have multiplied and expanded in order to include, community, elders and to share this important work in the best way that we can.

All donations we receive for our Nov. 21st, Live Zoom event, will go towards a honorarium for the Cowichan elders, the expenditures in the creation of this event, such as supporting the musicians/artists, the renting of Duncan Showroom Venue for the live performance, sound and video footage, Nikki Erkemedon/video/editing, the graphic design/Identity Graphic, Local Artist Stuart Padaguan/graphic artist, website support, Valley Voice ad, banners, community support etc.

Your interest and financial support in this project is a key part in weaving all our voices together and moving towards Reconcili-Action through musical exploration.

The initial idea of this project was to weave our voices in the true spirit of reconcili-Action through musical improvisation. Before I wrote the grant application, I first went to speak with my respected Indigenous Cowichan elders, allies here on the traditional territories of the Coast Salish, Quw’utsun lands.  They both gave blessings for me to ask for support for this musical initiative of making music together with settlers and Indigenous musicians. Once the grant was received, I again went to the elders with the best protocol that I knew, to honour and respectfully ask again for permission for this project and they gave their support and blessings.

There was the invitation to present this on the September 30th, the first National Truth and Reconciliation Day. This was perhaps a great idea initially, however after discussion, it became clear that it wasn't the place nor the event for this to happen. In the end, I sang a Gaelic Blessing of Peace from my ancestors to all the Indigenous peoples and Anne Schaefer played the harp with a traditional Irish song again honouring her lineage of healing and wellbeing as an offering and prayer.  The day was emotional as elders shared their personal stories of being in residential schools, musicians also performed and offered their gifts of song.  Nate Harris was one of the performers, who was part of this project. He shared his own songs with a full heart.

I invited Anne Schaefer and Dan Lapp to join me as the settlers in this musical improvisation reconcili-Action exploration, as dear friends and amazing musicians who value connection through improvisation. Not all musicians are comfortable to share their musicality in this way. The three of us, were witness to the entire Truth and Reconciliation Day, listening with an open heart and welcoming the stories to enter us. The walk began at 9 am and the sharing of stories and music ended at 2pm.  With this day lived alongside each other in silent honour of all that the survivors went through, all that the families went through when they lost their children who never made it home and all that continues to happen with our Indigenous friends, we were present with each other in a deep and deliberate way.

Just after 2pm on the 30th of Sept, we went to the Duncan Showroom,  and met with our honoured Indigenous allies, Qwalsimiyu (Catherine Sampson), Glenn Patterson and Hwiemtun (Fred Roland),  who had also been at the walk all day in support for the Children Who Didn't Make it Home.   Together we had all been witnesses and and carried in our bodies, hearts and minds all that was shared that day.

As we gathered on the stage, we each introduced ourselves and truly enjoy the experience of weaving, listening and played stunning music that we joined together in collaboration through Weaving, Connecting and Listening  - which resulted in Reconcili-Action thru Musical Improvisation.

EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW!

Cari Burdett releases new Lhasa cover and announces summer tour dates

 Jason Schneider  May 30, 2018

Cari Burdett, the Vancouver Island-based songstress, will bring her exotic fusion of jazz, art song, folk and opera eastward this June, including dates at the Winnipeg Jazz Festival,Toronto’s Burdock Music Hall, and Montreal’s Upstairs Jazz Bar. It also demonstrates Burdett’s sensuous multilingual repertoire that also includes songs by Mercedes Sosa, Pink Martini, Joni Mitchell and many others.

Burdett is currently working on the follow-up release to her 2015 debut full-length albumMagnolia, which earned a nomination for Best World Album at the Western Canada Music Awards. Magnolia was recorded with Grammy and Juno winner Joby Baker who was named Producer of the Year, along with Burdett winning Vocalist of the Year, at the 2016 Vancouver Island Music Awards (VIMA).

GYPSY  CABARET REVIEW

From the moment she stepped onto the stage, chanteuse and luscious storyteller Cari Burdett easily swept her audience into the international cabaret scene in the third offering of South Okanagan Concert Society’s season.  “Sweet Love” was the theme of the tour we embarked on and there was no doubt “amour” is truly Cari’s genre – passionate love for a person, for family, for nature, for place.  Her sensuous and intense deliver, her sultry mezzo voice and her graceful gestures transported us into the world inhabited by the troubadours and gypsies of old.  This is a genuine and inspired performer.

Cari’s natural gifts led us through the nightclubs of Rome, Paris, Berlin, Stockhom, New York and Santiago, Chile with timeless and theatrical flair.  Cari sang seamlessly in the language of each country.  Accompanying her on our delicious musical journey were four equally talented musicians.  Music arranger Adrian Dolan on piano and accordion kept the vibrant fusion of jazz, folk and world music moving easily throughout the entire performance.  Gypsy jazz guitarist Mark Atkinson and jazz bass player John Lee rounded out the pulsing, rich rhythms with great depth while the soaring, sweet notes from Juno award winning violinist Meredith Bates offered a complex counterpoint to the sorrowful tales of lost or passionate love.

While we were treated to love songs written by Canada’s Joni Mitchell, American Carole King and even Bizet’s “Carmen”, my favourite of the evening was an original composition by Cari titled “Let Me Go”.  It suited her style and singing intensity admirably.

The highlight for many in the audience was an Edith Piaf medley delivered with the same throaty fervor aficionados associate with the legendary French chanteuse.  It was a great way to end the ensemble’s first set.  If there was any regret that evening, it was the limited opportunity to hear the quartet play individually.  When they did just that, it was easy to appreciate what a wonderful ensemble they truly are.  Together they and Cari offered a unique and special package, a lovely present for Valentine’s Day.

Laurence Hobgood and Cari, Leo Nani, Hawaii "it's All Music", Jan 2018

Hello.... from warm and beautiful Hawaii…Enjoying time with my family and resting up before 2018 takes me away on its wonderful yearly journey.

I’m thrilled to be attending a workshop on the big island of Hawaii with master teachers Rhiannon and Laurence Hobgood starting on Sunday January 7th for the week.   Here Multiple Grammy nominee and Grammy winning pianist/composer/arranger/producer/educator Laurence Hobgood will join Rhiannon for this special, immersive week to examine and experience the connective tissue that bridges pure improvisation and song form.

I have studied under Rhiannon – Vocal Improvisation for a total of 13 years, including ALL THE WAY IN (ATWI) 2009 - one year Advanced Vocal Improvisation training (by invitation with 16 students from around the world).  It will be wonderful to work with Rhiannon again and bring back new ideas and musical knowledge to my performance and students!

HAPPY NEW YEAR to ALL!

Thank you poster sponsors 2017.jpeg

I would like to take a moment to THANK YOU  all of you for your  support  through-out 2017.  It’s been exciting, tiring, new directions and lots of fun.

A  big applause to this year’s  musicians, Sara Marreiros,  Adrian Dolan, Nick Mintenko, QuiN Etheridge-Pedden, Adam Dobres and dancer Marisa Jackson.

And we could not have done this without the communities support. A big thank you to all the generous sponsors.

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."

Happy New Year Everyone

Banff was Heaven...

I was high up in the Rockies, and I swear, I could touch the sky. I was flying with the angels and the creative birds that gather from time to time. I felt like I was in my own "flock", each unique and different, yet, as a collective, we all appreciated the details of compositions, the eclectic nuances of vibratos, the phrasing of texts, the silence in between.. We had coaching sessions with three very diverse yet deeply passionate musicians who gave lectures and offered one on one sessions. We met as a group of residents and shared our works in progress, then bravely allowed and invited the entire room of highly skilled and practiced, musicians to critique, offer feedback and share what they enjoyed about the performance. We performed in Canmore and in the various halls and theatres in at the Banff Centre and premiered new works. We visited each others studios in the late hours,  and were deeply inspired by each others work, and astonished at the extreme uniqueness of each and every project and musician/composer/conductor/vocalist.. there.  We walked in the mountains, and took in the fresh air, we witnessed wild life right all around us, as we were in a National Park. We ate meals together, laughed, cried and celebrated in the Mac Lab, the Solon evening in the Leighton Colony, the Dorm... We dormed with roommates and made friends for life. We collaborated on projects, took risks, improvised and dreamt of potential future happenings..collectives, festivals, dreams, projects, compositions.... We appreciated, were moved by, inspired, floored, astonished, broken open.. by the passion and commitment each artist has that was there.. every one.. true to their art..

The question is how to bring some of that home.. and to keep working even, in a small way, that is reminiscent.. that is the goal. I will venture to set up more of a studio space, where I can record and capture my songs as I create, and I will commit to making space and time to develop my song writing and composing of musical ideas..

I am beyond grateful for every minute I had there, and for all those that helped and supported me to be there. Many people helped with my children and this is this is the most important, that I was able to trust the love from my community to take care of them, while I was away.. Blessings. Cari.
